The Oscar Awards 2024 handed out their awards tonight at a ceremony held in Los Angeles. It was a ceremony with no major surprises, where Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Oppenheimer’ triumphed, winning seven statuettes, including best director, leading actor and supporting actor. Best Actress went to Emma Stone for her role in ‘Poor Creatures’.

The two Spanish films – The Snow Society and Robot Dreams – did not win any awards.

This edition was marked by an unprecedented fact, mainly due to register a large number of international productions nominated outside the category of Best International Film, highlighting the Best Film category where for the first time in its history two non-English language films managed to be nominated for the main category (Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest respectively), while all the films nominated for the Best Documentary category were non-US productions, while two non-English speaking films managed to be among the nominees for Best Animated Film (Robot Dreams and Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka respectively), while other non-English speaking productions such as The Count, Godzilla Minus One and The Snow Society achieved a nomination in technical sections,6 however, this edition would also impose an important record of international films winning the Oscar in a single ceremony, being in total 5 films that would win a statuette they are: France’s Anatomy of a Fall (winner for Best Original Screenplay), Britain’s The Zone of Interest (winner for Best International Film and Best Sound), Ukraine’s 20 Days in Mariupol (winner for Best Documentary) and Japan’s Godzilla Minus One (winner for Best Visual Effects) and Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka (winner for Best Animated Film) respectively. 7 The Zone of Interest became the first UK film in a language other than English to win the Oscar for Best International Film.
